How does electric underfloor heating work?
Electric underfloor heating converts electrical energy directly into heat energy via heating cables or heating mats installed beneath floor finishes.
When power is supplied, resistive heating conductors inside the cables generate heat through the Joule heating effect. Heat transfers upwards by conduction to the floor screed, tile adhesive or flooring material, then spreads evenly across the entire floor surface. Warm floors emit radiant heat to heat surrounding surfaces and air inside the room.
Most systems use a programmable thermostat to regulate temperature. Once the target floor or room temperature is reached, the thermostat cuts power; when temperatures drop below the set value, power resumes automatically.
Unlike convection heaters that warm only air, electric underfloor heating delivers gentle, uniform radiant warmth from the ground up, eliminating cold floor zones.
