The result depends on the pipe outside diameter, heated length, pipe material, minimum ambient temperature, required maintain temperature, insulation and cable output. For water pipe freeze protection, the objective is usually to keep the pipe and its contents above the freezing point during the coldest expected condition.
Heat tape for pipes, pipe heating cable and heat trace cable are often used interchangeably in general searches, but the correct product can vary by application.
